Wolfdog
From WikiFur, the furry encyclopedia.
Wolfdog is an informal name for a hybrid of a wolf and domestic dog (usually an arctic breed such as the husky). The title character in the animated film Balto is an example.
The ownership and handling of wolf dogs is a matter of fierce debate. Wolf Park has "amassed ample evidence that shows that when kept in improper conditions, these animals can pose grave danger to people - especially to children." Other sources are more moderate in their cautions, but most stress that wolf dogs require more attention and responsibility than standard dog breeds.
[edit] Wolfdog dog breeds
There are two breeds established by crossbreeding wolves and dogs, recognized by the FCI:
- Czechoslovak wolfdog (Czech: Československý vlčák)
- Saarloos wolfdog (Dutch: Saarlooswolfhond)
Dogs of these breeds generally resemble wolves in exterior and character, but unlike wolves they are able to live with humans as a pet.
